Rhiannon Morgan, Gouache on blue paper 2025 - 1 of 2 panels
I'm enamored with Annie's floral patterns. This work and its sister panel exhibit a balance of classic and techno, with a dose of surfer aesthetic.
The bright paint colors are dreamy in their neon tones. In the course of painting 63 flowers by hand, each with multiple layers, what was the artist thinking? Did she stop thinking anything but the tools, colors and forms?
The central nude figure is drawn with fluid lines, holding the floral pattern in place as they surround it with their puffy softness. The flowers are created with gouache, a medium with which the artist has developed a gorgeous technique over the years.
Annie begins these works with geometric compositions and then applies the colors. As a geometry afficionado, I find the structure a huge part of the appeal. This art is well-thought out. Penciled lines remain visible, for those who want to piece together the process that resulted in this colorful, soft work.
Note: Annie and I discussed the paper material being one that biodegrades. She is fond of the limited lifetime of paper. More about Annie when we record our next conversation. I always appreciate her point of view - original, dynamic, honest & deep.
