18" x 24" Gouache on paper
I was quite taken by this gouache piece by my friend Annie Morgan AKA Muktiji, along with its sister piece (lady underwater) and shuttled them from the East coast to the West coast, strengthened and enwombed in hard tubes to protect them. I often say, "this is a piece by my tattooed raver friend - she is really onto something in her recent work." Because the details appear dainty and are so lovely; but they are fierce and opinionated. They embody the utmost feminine spirit of grace against friction, difficulty, opposition, struggle... and then there is balance.
I enjoy walking up to them up close, because every brush stroke has a beauty to it. And I enjoy watching her stop-motion videos on tiktok and instagram, which show the geometry underlying her patterned floral compositions.
Have you ever been ostracized or traumatized? This is how it feels. Deep stuff.
